Dayton Flyers: 92 Virginia Military Institute Keydets: 56
The Dayton Flyers hosted the VMI Keydets Friday night in front of a nearly sold at UD Arena. Senior guard Charles Cooke did not play because of a wrist injury. This was just a precautionary measure. Head Coach Archie Miller said after the game that the X-rays and MRI on Cooke were negative and he is day to day going forward. He injured it in the first half of the Vanderbilt game Wednesday night. The Flyers don’t play another game for a week so they wanted to give Cooke a little bit of time to heal. Dayton opened up the game on an 8-2 run in the first 3+ minutes but the Keydets came back within the next couple minutes to make the game 11-9 with 15:01 left in the first half. This is the closest that VMI got for the rest of the game. The Flyers then went on a 26-10 run over the next 10 minutes to make it 37-19 with 4:35 to go in the half. Dayton took a 47-29 lead into the locker room. The Flyers shot 61.5% in the first half while holding the Keydets to only 37.5%. At the 6:14 mark of the half, senior guard Scoochie Smith became the 46th member of the 1,000 point club with a free throw. Dayton started the second half on an 11-2 run and the rout was on. The Flyers outscored the Keydets in the second half 45-27. Dayton’s senior class has 87 wins and are only 10 away from the school record. The Flyers tied the school record for 3-pointers in a game with 15.
