Dayton Flyers: 75 East Tennessee State Buccaneers: 61
East Tennessee State traveled up to Dayton, Ohio to take on the Flyers Saturday. They ran into a team that has been on a roll and it definitely showed. In front of 13,000+ the Flyers took an early 11-5 advantage. The Buccaneers were able to pull even at 13 until Dayton went on a 10-2 run to push the lead to 23-15. The Flyers would take a lead as big as 15 in the first half before taking a 37-25 lead into the locker room. ETSU was held to just 32.3% from the field in the first half and only attempted 2 free throws. Dayton shot 48.4% from the field in the first half. The Flyers would open up the second half on a 14-4 run that put them up 51-29. This pretty much put the game away with 13:25 left to go. ETSU was able to get the lead down to 14 in the second half but it was much too little too late. The story of the night was the defensive effort by Dayton senior guard Kyle Davis who shut down TJ Cromer of ETSU. Cromer averaged almost 19 points a game this season and hadn’t scored under 10 in any game this year. He also has shot 44% from the field this season. Cromer was held to just 4 points on 11 shots against the Flyers. He shot 9% from the field and turned the ball over 3 times. I’ve always said that Kyle Davis is one of the best defenders in the country and he continues to impress.
The Buccaneers shot 36.4% (20-55) from the field, 38.9% (7-18) from the three point line and 73.7% (14-19) from the free throw line. They had 33 rebounds, 15 assists, 18 turnovers, 2 blocks and 6 steals. East Tennessee State was led by junior guard Desonta Bradford who scored 12 points and had 6 rebounds in 27 minutes. Junior forward David Burrell came off the bench and scored 12 points in 20 minutes.
The Flyers shot 50% (30-60) from the field, 16.7% (3-18) from the three and 66.7% (12-18) from the charity stripe. They had 39 rebounds, 16 assists, 13 turnovers, 9 blocks and 7 steals. Dayton dominated points in the paint 50-24 and fast break points 23-7. The Flyers were led by senior guard Charles Cooke who had 24 points and 8 rebounds in 32 minutes. In his first start of the season, senior forward Kendall Pollard notched his first double double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in 31 minutes.
