Dayton Flyers: 76 St. Bonaventure Bonnies: 72
A sold out University of Dayton Arena welcomed the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers were looking to get their 6th straight win to keep pace with VCU at the top of the Atlantic 10. UD beat St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center in early January 90-74. Dayton took an early 2-0 lead but then struggled for the first part of the half. The Bonnies went on a 26-9 run over the next 12+ minutes to take a 26-11 lead with 7:20 to go in the half. The Flyers couldn’t get anything going. St. Bonaventure played a 2-3 zone for almost the entire first half and Dayton’s offense seemed to be sleepwalking. Clank after clank from down low and missed 3 after missed 3. UD was 4-15 to start the game while St. Bonaventure was 9-14 early. The Flyers needed someone to turn the game around and they got just that. Senior guard Scoochie Smith hit a couple of free throws and a couple of 3 pointers that sparked a 23-8 run to end the half. Dayton trailed 34-28 at the half. The Flyers were able to tie the game and then take the lead with a 10-4 start to the second half. Both teams then traded buckets for the majority of the half. Dayton was able to get a lead as big as 8 but this lead would not last very long. St. Bonaventure wouldn’t go away. After a barrage of free throws late in the game and a three from Bonny guard Jaylen Adams from about 35 feet, the Flyers were able to prevail and stay atop the A10. A big turning point in this game happened at the 18:40 mark in the second half when St. Bonaventure freshman forward Josh Ayeni picked up a technical foul during a tie up situation. The Bonnies were going to have the ball up 4 points but instead, the Flyers got a couple free throws and the possession. Dayton capitalized and got 3 points out of the possession and then tied the game up in the following possession. The junior backcourt tandem for the Bonnies, Matt Mobley and Jaylen Adams, did not leave the floor while combining for 49 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.
