March Preview: VCU Rams

The VCU Rams will most likely be picked to participate in their 16th NCAA tournament when the brackets are released on Sunday. This will be the Rams 7th straight tournament selection (school record) where they are 13-15 all time. VCU finished second in the Atlantic 10 and are still competing for an A10 tournament championship.

Strength: Defense

Ever since Shaka Smart took over the VCU program in 2009, the Rams have had a motto called “Havoc”. This refers to their defensive prowess. They play full court defense and are all over the place. Will Wade continued to use this motto when he took over in 2015. VCU allows 66.2 points a game and only gives up 10.4 assists a game which is 14th in the country. The Rams average 7.7 steals a game, 26th in the nation and get a steal on 9.6% of defensive possessions which is 23rd nationally. They force 15.1 turnovers a game which is good enough for 29th in the nation and they force a turnover on 18.9% of defensive possessions which is 23rd in the nation.

Weakness: Three Point Shooting

The Rams have struggled to make jump shots all season, but shooting from behind the 3 point line has been even more of a struggle. VCU only shoots 33.1% from the three point line (258 in the nation). They only make 5.8 threes a game (305 in the nation) while attempting only 17.6 (305 in the nation). On the other hand, they are very effective in the paint. If a team would sit in a 2-3 zone and force VCU to shoot the ball from deep, this could create a lot of problems for the Rams.
