Why They Are Here

Gary Trent Jr., the number one shooting guard in the 2017 high school class, finds himself at #82 in the CPP Top 100 because of his pure scoring mentality and physicality. Throughout high school and AAU, Trent Jr. showed his ability to get to the rim and crash the boards on offense. He is a fearless player with a good frame for a shooting guard. His shooting can be inconsistent at times, but when he’s hot he can be a complete game changer.

Role on This Year’s Team

Eight players from last year’s Duke program are gone, forcing Coach K to lean on Grayson Allen and a bunch of young guys to take him back to the Final Four. Trent Jr., a probable starter, will be one of the main scorers on this Blue Devils team, being capable of scoring from anywhere on the floor. While Grayson Allen will most likely have the ball in his hands during crunch time situations, you can expect Gary Trent Jr. to be making big time plays down the stretch, from hammer dunks to NBA range threes.

College Season/NBA Prospects

Gary Trent Jr. has NBA potential, but will most likely not be drafted after the 2017-2018 season. He has the frame to be a wing player, but does not have the pure athleticism that most scouts look for. His scoring ability will be intriguing to NBA teams moving forward, but there is still much room for improvement. Reports have shown that scouts believe he has a good defensive approach, but lacks the effort needed, especially in an NBA setting. Trent Jr. will gain more maturity after a year on the college basketball scene, and there is no doubt that Mike Krzyzewski will turn him into an NBA-ready player.
