March Preview: Florida State Seminoles

If we did a poll before the season who would come in second place in the ACC I don’t think anyone would guess Florida State. The Seminoles checked in just behind ACC Champ North Carolina in the top conference in college basketball. Florida State had a roller coaster ACC schedule starting very hot winning 4 games in a row but struggled through two tough stretches that saw them lose games to Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, and Syracuse. Leonard Hamilton’s team does have 12 regular season wins over KenPom top 50 teams.

Strength: Depth

One of the reasons that we have major upsets early in the tournament is because of fatigue. Both the ACC and Big-Ten tournaments have teams play on multiple days in a row and do not end until right before or on Selection Sunday. These teams then have to turn around to travel and play just a few days later. Florida State should be able to avoid fatigue due to their depth. The Seminoles go 10 or 11 men deep at times with talented players up and down their bench. Head coach Leonard Hamilton can rotate through his guys to see who can get hot and keep fresh legs on the court at all times. If Dwayne Bacon and Jonathan Isaac are fresh for the last 5 minutes of their games they will be a tough team to beat.

Weakness: Free Throw Shooting

The Seminoles have struggled at the charity stripe this year shooting 69% as a team (nice). In case your forgot March Madness is absolutely crazy and multiple comebacks are mounted due to teams not able to convert free throws late in games. Florida State should practice their free throw shooting this week as well as insuring to get the ball to Jonathan Isaac, who is their best free throw shooter, in late game situations.
