Virginia is a top 25 team and is lead by senior point guard London Perrantes. I do not want to discount the Hoos with this preview of their strengths and weaknesses but it is very simple. Virginia imposes their style on every team that they play. They play very very low scoring games and hope that Perrantes and their roll players can provide enough scoring to outlast their opponents. In my mind the key to success for Virginia is Kyle Guy. The McDonald’s All-American freshman has the ability to carry the offense with his microwave scoring ability. UVA beat UNC combining their trademark defense and a hot streak from Kyle Guy who lead all scorers with 17 points.
This is very simple, Virginia is the best defensive efficiency team according to KenPom and the eye test definitely confirms it. The Cavaliers shut down every offense they face and that will most likely continue. The Hoos force opponents into low possession, high stress games.
As good as the Virginia defense has been, the offense has been bad. The Hoos have not put up more than 71 points (excluding overtime games) since January. The offense is basically London Perrantes shooting and everyone else preparing to go back on defense. As I said above, Kyle Guy is the key for UVA because he can really put the ball in the basket but is very inconsistent.
