Wake Forest is an extremely underrated team in the ACC that came on late to make a push into the tournament. John Collins is an absolute monster down low and Bryant Crawford has also developed into a very talented point guard. Danny Manning may only be in his second year in Winston-Salem but he has built a formidable core of players. The Demon Deacons will be a very tough out depending on their matchups.
Strength: John Collins
I have tried to shy away from discussing each team’s best player as their strength but in my last March Preview I have to talk about John Collins. Skilled big men are few and far between in college basketball this year. Collins is the best big man in the ACC this season and one of the best in the country. He shoots a high percentage inside and is a monster on the boards. If Collins can avoid foul trouble he will dominate any opponent in the first weekend.
Weakness: Forcing Turnovers & No Big Wins
Any power 5 team that is ranked 300th or below in a statistic automatically makes their weakness part of the article. Wake Forest ranks 312th in defensive turnover %. That is not the worst statistic in the world but the game is much easier if teams are giving you the ball back and easy baskets in transition. The second Wake Forest weakness is that they do not have many big wins. The Demon Deacons had plenty of opportunities in the ACC to pick up top notch wins but only have a win over Louisville to hang their hats on. I am confident about Wake Forest in a first round game but once they face stiffer competition it can get dicey.
