Why Are They Here
Tyus Battle is included in the CPP Top 100 because of his explosive play mostly on the defensive side of the ball. In an ACC conference boasting numerous potential draft picks, Battle excelled on defense in his freshman campaign, showing his willingness to guard multiple positions and fight over perimeter ball screens. On offense, there is still room for improvement but Battle is certainly capable of hitting a pull up mid range jumper and the three ball.
Role on This Year’s Team
On an extremely young Syracuse team consisting of only one upperclassman in Frank Howard, Battle will need to take a leadership role coming off of a freshman year in which he earned a lot of playing time. With Tyler Lydon leaving the Orange to become a member of the Denver Nuggets through the NBA draft, Battle and Taurean Thompson are left as the only returning starters. Battle will need to become an even greater offensive threat, and will most likely be the guy with the ball in crunch time situations.
College Season/NBA Prospects
Being the aggressive player that he is, Tyus Battle will have no problem defending at the NBA level. The five-star recruit coming out of high school was not thought to have a complete offensive game, however, his freshman stats at Syracuse show otherwise. Assuming his play continues to level out, Battle can certainly can be a first round pick in the 2018 draft following his sophomore year at Syracuse.
