East Carolina shooting guard Elijah Hughes will transfer to Syracuse, he announced on Thursday. This decision comes after Hughes toured campus with Jim Boeheim and associate head coach Adrian Autry yesterday. Consequently, he cancelled his visit to Iona, which was scheduled for Saturday.
The 6’6” guard comes off a season in which he averaged 7.8 points and just over 2 rebounds per game for the Pirates. Hughes’ strength is focused in his ability to drive to the basket and make the people around him better. He also plays smart, strong defense so he will fit quite well in the Orange’s iconic 2-3 zone.
Hughes, a product of South Kent Prep (Conn.), played alongside current Syracuse forward Matthew Moyer during their senior year of high school.
Per NCAA transfer rules, Hughes is required to sit out the entire 2017-2108 season. He would then have three years of eligibility remaining.
