Why They Are Here
Joel Berry II comes in as the #6 best college basketball player in the CPP Top 100, a spot he as earned during his time at UNC because of his ability to be an offensive threat and lead his team to two consecutive national championship games. His three point capabilities are matched by almost no other on the college basketball scene, and his experience has allowed him to improve as his career has progressed. He is the definition of a floor general, which is why he is ranked as the best point guard in college basketball for the upcoming season.
Role on this Year’s Team
Berry II will pick up exactly where he left off last year. He was a huge asset on the national championship team from a year ago, and his leadership qualities and offensive production will make it tough for Roy Williams to take him off the court. He has proven that he can hit the clutch shots, which will be much needed during ACC play. UNC’s recruiting class for the 2017-2018 season is not as impressive as those of the past, so Berry II will surely need to step up more down the stretch.
College Season/NBA Prospects
Heading into college, Joel Berry II might not have been the most ideal NBA prospect. He came into UNC as an undersized point guard and, although he was quick, was not freakishly athletic like most other NBA prospects. However, after four years at the college level, Berry has shown that while he might not be the first choice for an NBA point guard, he certainly possesses the intangibles that could make him an interesting prospect to NBA scouts. He is a great passer and has the basketball IQ to get him to the next level.
