E.C. Matthews Hits Dagger In Overtime To Advance Past Oklahoma

This. Is. March.

How fitting is it that the first game of the Round of 64 went into overtime? Thanks to an E.C. Matthews dagger three with 45 seconds left in overtime, Rhode Island was able to survive Trae Young and Oklahoma, 83-78.

Matthews and Fatts Russell did much of the heavy lifting for the Rams as they hit key shots throughout and kept their team in the game when the Sooners seemed to be pulling ahead.

Matthews finished with 16 points and Fatts Russell chipped in 15. Both hit 3 three-pointers.

Young scored a game-high 28 points.

In the overtime period, it was clear Young was gassed and Matthews took full advantage. Because he’s such a threat from deep, the Oklahoma defenders tried their best to stay in front but Matthews had no problem getting into the lane and creating opportunities for himself and teammates.

With the win, Rhode Island will face the winner of No. 15 Iona/No. 2 Duke. The Rams will likely see Duke on Saturday which will be an interesting matchup considering the Blue Devils are a great rebounding team and that’s where Danny Hurley’s team struggles.

Despite the late-season struggles, let’s tip our hats to Trae Young. He had one of the best seasons in college basketball statistically and was much watch television every time he took the court. No one really talked about this kid coming into the season and it was awesome to see him take the college hoops world by storm.
