2016-2017 stats: 11.3 PPG 4.3 RPG
Why he is here
Esa Ahmad had a big impact on the Mountaineers last year holding down the front court and being very active in the very famous Press Virginia. At 6’8” Ahmad can get plenty of touches inside and be very active on the glass, Ahmad can also stretch out and shoot the three at times which will keep defenders guarding him. If he continues to improve upon his play he will be a key component for a West Virginia team looking to knock off Kansas’ Big 12 Championship streak.
Role on this years team
Last year Ahmad was a starter in the front court but was still playing off Nathan Adrian’s lead, however with Adrian gone he will be the primary Big man for the Mountaineers. His minutes will increase this year which will result in improvements in the Points and Rebounds per game. Look for Ahmad to be the key player inside for West Virginia as he moves into his junior season and don’t be surprised if at the end of the season he ends up averaging around 15 and 10 per game.
College season/ NBA Prospects
Ahmad started to gain some interest from the NBA but wisely he stayed for another year of college. If Ahmad can continue to improve his play inside and outside don’t be surprised to see him on some draft boards this season. Most likely he will stay two years but if he makes a big jump the NBA is right around the corner.
