Fast rising point guard Mark Smith has committed to Brad Underwood and Illinois. Smith originally committed to play baseball at Missouri and then decided to focus on basketball last summer before having a massive senior season. During his senior season, Smith became Mr. Basketball in Illinois and received huge interest from multiple big name schools. John Groce started Smith’s recruitment and new head coach Brad Underwood was able to pick up the pieces and close the deal.
During Smith’s senior season he received interest from Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Duke, and Michigan State among others. Illinois can offer immediate playing time and great potential with Brad Underwood recently taking the helm.
Illinois lost Jeremiah Tilmon in the coaching transition but kept the commitment from Trent Frazier. Combine Frazier and Smith in the backcourt and Illinois is set up for success in the future. Watch out for Smith and Illinois as a turnaround team in the Big-Ten next season.
