Why They Are Here
After a promising freshman campaign was cut short by an injury, Shamet became a household name last season after a medical redshirt season, leading the Shockers to yet another MVC championship. He became a true threat to score from anywhere on the court, shooting an impressive 43.9% from beyond the arc. Along with that, he can facilitate on offense, averaging over 3 assists per game from a mainly scoring role. His length can allow him to be difference maker on the defensive side as well.
Role on This Year’s Team
Currently, Shamet is out with a foot injury so it remains to be seen how much, if any, time he will miss this season. However, regardless of that Shamet will be among the leader for MVC and National Player of the Year. Shamet will have the reigns to the Shockers this season, a team that returns almost everyone. Add in the fact that Markis McDuffie will be out until at least December, and you have a recipe for big numbers and huge star potential.
College Season/NBA Prospects
A lot of Shamet’s NBA prospects depend on how he comes back from injury. If he looks good, he may be able to play himself into a early-entry candidate. However, I view him as a borderline second round pick right now who will probably play at least two more college seasons. But with his range and athleticism, a big year could easily force me to eat crow.
