Oklahoma: 85, VCU: 81
March 20th, 2016
No. 2 Oklahoma faced No. 10 VCU in the second round of March Madness in Oklahoma City. The atmosphere was a bit different in the start of the game because Buddy Hield was off offensively and out after only scoring seven points in the first half. VCU as a team wasn’t able to effectively react to Hield being out and having to deal with other players on the team that they were not expecting, therefore leading to the halftime score of 44-31.
Oklahoma won this game 85-81 against VCU because in the second half Buddy Hield came back offensively and scored 29 more points, getting a total of 36 points in the game. Also, Isaiah Cousins and Jordan Woodward had great shooting games for Oklahoma, with 15 and 17 points.
For VCU, Melvin Johnson and JeQuan Lewis were leading scorers with 23 and 22 points. They helped VCU come up from being down by about 14 points and then brought them up to a five point difference in the first half at 5:32 with the score 30-25 Oklahoma. VCU as a team was originally making 3 for 12 shots, but then made seven straight shots in a row and switched up their luck.
Today was a great game for Oklahoma because they reacted to Hield being off his game in the first half very well and never gave up, ultimately gaining a spot into the Sweet 16. Now with a record of 27-7, the Sooners will play No. 3 Texas A&M on Thursday, March 24th at 7:37 pm on TBS.
