Throughout the course of the off-season I will release my season’s preview for each Power 5 team. I will start out west with the PAC-12 teams and the work my way east. These previews will be very simple but a nice guide for the casual college basketball fans to become aware of some of the new faces and up and coming teams for the 2017-2018 season.
Season Preview: Arizona State Sun Devils
Last Season: 15-18
Key Losses: Andre Adams, Sam Cunliffe, Romaine Jackson, Maurice O’Field, Chris Odionu, Jethro Tshisumpa, Torian Graham, and Obinna Oleka
Key Additions: Kimani Lawrence, Remy Martin, and De’Quon Lake (Other transfers have committed to ASU but will not play this season)
Bobby Hurley had an extremely disappointing season after his program showed great promise during his first season in Tempe. Hurley raked in a number of top recruits but the Sun Devils didn’t show any improvement on the court. Things do not look any better this season for Hurley and company. Two of Hurley’s top 3 recruits from last year have transferred to another school and a number of other key players have either transferred or exhausted their eligibility. 8 scholarship players departing from a 15-18 team doesn’t bode well for this program. Hurley now brings in two 4-star recruits and a number of transfers but all the transfers must sit out before playing.
This will be a building and development year for Bobby Hurley. He will need to build a core with the remaining young players while staying hot on the recruiting trail. The 2018-2019 season could be huge for this team as the young players have great experience and the transfers become eligible to play. Don’t expect ASU to make any noise in the PAC-12 this season but Bobby Hurley’s sideline demeanor will make watching the games tolerable.
