Throughout the course of the off-season I will release my season’s preview for each Power 5 team. I will start out west with the PAC-12 teams and the work my way east. These previews will be very simple but a nice guide for the casual college basketball fans to become aware of some of the new faces and up and coming teams for the 2017-2018 season.
Season Preview: Washington Huskies
Last Season: 9-22
Key Losses: Markelle Fultz, Matthew Atewe
Key Additions: Jaylen Nowell, Nahziah Carter, Hameir Wright
The Lorenzo Romar era at Washington has come to a close. Romar was able to rake in tons of recruits and turn them into top NBA Draft picks but the results never showed up on the court. Jim Boeheim’s disciple Mike Hopkins now takes over and will look to turn the program around.
Romar did not leave the cupboard completely bare as the roster has a few talented players to build on. Noah Dickerson is a big man that has NBA potential with some development. David Crisp is a junior point guard that has shown potential even behind Fultz last year.
Hopkins went right to work on the recruiting trail bringing in a solid class of Nowell, Carter, and Wright. Those 3 guys should all start before the end of the season. This is a solid recruiting class that Hopkins can build on as well.
It will be a tough season for Washington but look for Hopkins to begin to implement his core basketball values (likely the 2-3 zone) and develop his young core.
