March Preview: Wichita State Shockers

After to losing at Illinois State on January 14th, Wichita State has won 15 straight games.   To add a little flavor to that, each of these games was decided by 15 points or more.  The Shockers are peaking at the right time and is a tough matchup for any NCAA Tournament team.

Strengths:

Five in, five out.  Wichita State has 11-12 guys who play almost every game and thrive in their roles.  The deep bench is a big reason why the Shockers are a solid offensive team.  Wichita State is 11th in the country in offensive adjusted efficiency and third in three-point shooting.  Like you’ve heard me say in my past previews, an offense is vital in the NCAA Tournament.  This team has so many weapons who know how to put the ball in the bucket which is the main ingredient for a deep run in the tourney.

Weaknesses:

Lack of quality of opponents is always an area of concern for top mid-major programs entering the Big Dance.  Wichita State is 0-3 against current KenPom Top 50 teams (Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Louisville).  While all these games were during non-conference play in the months of November and December, the Shockers only played ranked in KenPom’s current Top 60 teams (Illinois State).
